Episode 136 Vacation Food Planning Part 2 (Replay)

 In Podcast

Part 2 of Vacation Food Planning focuses on planning food when you are staying in cabins or rental homes, road trips and large family gatherings. You can hear part one on food planning when you are staying in hotels here.

Plan ahead. What amenities are in the rental space? What meals will you eat at the home and what meals will you eat away from the home?

-Cook ahead as much as possible and make sure the containers you are using fit well in your cooler.

-Use online grocery ordering. You can pick it up on your way to your destination or some services even deliver. Walmart.com, Kroger.com, and Instacart are all great resources. Some even deliver.

-Plan one lunch and one dinner out. The best day is usually not the last day. The last day is a good time to eat up leftovers as you are cleaning up and preparing to leave.

Large family gatherings are similar to staying in rental homes, but you have to plan more.

-Who is going to be “in charge?” Have one person be in charge even if everyone is contributing.

-You can have one person or group do all the cooking or you can have different people in charge of each meal. Be clear which meals are together and which ones are on your own.

-Have all the communal meals in one location.

-Cook ahead as much as possible.

-Use online grocery ordering.

-Use paper plates and make sure you have a sharpie to label water bottles or cups.

-Think about the number of kids vs adults and plan accordingly.

-Use Sign Up Genius to coordinate the food everyone is bringing. It is a free tool and very useful.

-Consider having the last meal at a restaurant or catered. Have a simple menu that is pre-paid. Marie Fiebach is a married mother of four active kids. She helps busy families plan and execute weeknight dinner so they can recapture a little calm in the crazy. You can see her every week on KAKE TV’s Good Morning Kakeland or listen to the Feed Your Family Tonight Podcast.
