Episode 144 4 Steps to Get Ready for a Back to School Routine

 In Podcast

Happy August Friends! My kids still have two blissful weeks of summer, but I know many of you have already started school. Today’s podcast has 4 Steps to help you get ready for the routine of the school year.

Step 1 Asses where you are now at the end of the summer.

What is working really well in your home? What is causing hiccups or frustrations?

One thing causing me frustration is too many trips to the grocery store. I want to get back to a regular weekly trip. You may want to get ready and do a deep dive grocery trip. You can hear all about this quarterly shopping trip for basics in Episode 99.

Step 2 Think about what things will look like once school starts.

Do you need to pack lunches or will your kids get hot lunch at school? What kinds of after school snacks do you need. Will you need “mini meals” to get your kids through sports practice or super light snacks so they can eat an early dinner?

Will breakfast look different once school starts?

Step 3 Look at dinnertime.

-Summer dinners are often more relaxed than school night dinners. Take into account your family commitments to homework and other activities. If you are like me you are fitting a lot of life in 4 hours from 4 PM to 8PM. Getting dinner on the table takes more planning during the school year.

Step 4 Think about your time.

With the kids in school how will your schedule change? Will you have a little more time to get things done during the day? When will you meal plan and grocery shop. (I plan to block out time on my calendar so I can get back in a routine.)

Taking these steps to think about how you will establish new routines will help you build better habits this fall. Once tasks become routines it frees up brain space and you can focus on things that are more important like your kids and your spouse. This helps build stronger families.

I am looking for someone to come and talk with me on-air for an upcoming episode. If you would like to join me, fill out this simple application. If you want to hear what it is like to be on air with me, check out Episode 116 or Episode 141.
